Blackpink and BTS are two K-Pop idols that will make history by receiving many awards at the MTV VMAs in 2022.

BTS, the much more nominated group at this year’s awards show, won group of the year for the fourth time in a row. The MTV Video Music Awards, along with the Billboard Music Awards, Grammy Awards, and American Music Awards, are one of the four main yearly music awards programs in the United States.

The win of the K-pop phenomenon was revealed at the award ceremony on Sunday in Newark, New Jersey, however, the band members elected not to come since they are now focusing on individual projects in South Korea.

Other groups included in the same category were Blackpink, City Girls, Foo Fighters, Imagine Dragons, Maneskin, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Silk Sonic. BTS received nominated for best K-pop, best choreography, best metaverse performance, and best visual effects. According to the source, Jungkook won a separate nomination for song of the summer for his participation to “Left and Right,” a song he composed with American singer-songwriter Charlie Puth.

Blackpink was nominated for best metaverse performance as well as group of the year. The last time an artist won a trophy from a music competition in the United States was in 2020, when the K-pop girl group’s hit “How You Like That” made history as the first K-pop girl group to accomplish so.

Before the ceremony began, Blackpink was awarded the award for the newly produced greatest metaverse performance for their in-game concert in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Additional nominees were BTS, Charli XCX, Justin Bieber, Rift Tour, and Twenty One Pilots.
