MANILA — In Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, a Chinese national used hot coffee to repel an armed confrontation.

The 57-year-old victim, according to police, opened the building’s gate on Wednesday morning while enjoying coffee at a business in Brgy. Tagga after receiving a call informing him that someone was coming to pick up car parts.

The 30-year-old suspect declared a hold-up, pointed a gun at the victim, and entered when the gate opened.

The victim chose to spill his coffee in the suspect’s face rather than obey.

The suspect might have panicked as a result and fled out the gate right away.

The victim called for assistance right away.

After being spotted riding a tricycle, the suspect was taken into custody around fifteen minutes later.

When the suspect was shown the victim’s description, he positively identified him.

The suspect was found in possession of a loaded firearm.

The suspect defended himself by claiming that an employee of the business only promised to give him a sizable sum of money in exchange for him robbing the victim.

He claims that his accomplice left him off close to the institution after picking him up from Tuao town, Cagayan.

He allegedly received the gun from the accomplice as well.

The Tuguegarao police are holding the suspect, who will be charged with attempted robbery and breaking the firearms law.

The unusual method of self-defense quickly gained traction on social media, with many users calling the man’s reaction both “brave” and “resourceful.” Others pointed out the risks involved, noting that such actions could provoke further violence.

Despite the mixed reactions, the incident highlights how unpredictable situations can require split-second decisions—and how everyday objects can sometimes make a difference in critical moments.

Authorities are currently investigating the incident and reviewing nearby surveillance footage to identify the suspect.
