This made repeated calls for German people to stay at home. The contagion is showing no signs of subsiding authorities that have ordered the school to close and non-essential shops to shut.

Also, the leaders in some bigger cities and regions have warned that they may be forced to take tougher action. Two small Bavarian villages have imposed a lockdown.

On Wednesday, Michael Mueller, Berlin mayor said: “I cannot and will not rule out taking further measures in the coming days.”

He warned, “The question of lockdown can play a role. That can be decided quickly. In that case, the parks and gardens will be closed.”
