(UPDATE) BTS members will begin their required military duty on Monday, beginning with the eldest member, Jin, according to their agency.

“BTS members are presently working on plans to complete their military duty,” label Big Hit Music stated in a statement released on the WeVerse app.

“After the great concert to promote Busan’s bid for World Expo 2030, and as each person begins on independent efforts, it’s the right time, and the members of BTS are proud to serve,” the message stated.

Big Hit was referring to the seven-member group’s show in Busan last Saturday, which drew thousands of admirers, most of whom came from abroad.

Jin, 29, will be the first member to enroll after releasing his solo album, according to the agency.

“Group member Jin will commence the process as soon as his schedule for his solo release is completed at the end of October, and he will then pursue the Korean government’s enlisting procedure,” Big Hit said.

“Other members of the group want to carry out their military duty in accordance with their own personal intentions,” it stated.

Big Hit said that the BTS members “are looking forward to reconvening as a group again around 2025 following their military obligation.”

After South Korea’s conscription law was altered in 2020, Jin’s enlistment was postponed until the end of the year.

Because South Korea is officially at war with nuclear-armed North Korea, all able-bodied young males under the age of 30 are required to serve in the military for two years.

South Korea’s defense minister previously stated that BTS, who are largely recognized with taking K-pop into the mainstream in the United States, may be permitted to continue playing and rehearsing for worldwide performances while serving in the military.

The septet stated in June that it will take a sabbatical from group activities to focus on solo projects.
