The shark bit the 56-year-old man, named Antonio Roseto Degli Abruzzi by Colombian media, when he was swimming along a cliff.

According to local media, an Italian tourist died Friday after being attacked by a shark in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Colombia’s San Andres island.

“Yes, he died,” said a senior Navy officer who requested anonymity to AFP.

The strange attack occurred in an area known as “La Piscinita” on the southwest side of San Andres, which is roughly 380 kilometers (235 miles) off the coast of Nicaragua, according to the Teleislas channel.

According to local media, the shark attack occurred in an area with few swimmers.
