A man from Davao got infected with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) inside a cockpit after watching a cockfight. Promised himself that after he recovered he will quit gambling.
William Gonzales is the first COVID-19 patient from General Santos City. He said he got infected with the virus in Davao City during a two-day 6-cock derby at New Davao Matina Gallera in March.
Recalling, the Davao City was considered as a COVID-19 ground zero, because out of the number of COVID-19 cases in the Davao Region, 26 had an exposure to the cockpit in Matina, which is also linked to some of the COVID-19 cases in North Cotabato, Maguindanao, Lanao del Norte, Bukidnon, Butuan, and General Santos City, based on DOH region XI data.
According to Gonzales, he was tempted by the huge prize of a total of P26 million in the derby fight. However, he was yet to determine who does he got the virus due to the numerous number of people inside the cockpit.
Based on his interview on ABS-CBN News, he said, “Pero bago pumasok ‘yung mga tao doon, tine-test naman. Wala akong napansin, pero siyempre minsan ‘yung sigaw-sigaw ba, yung mga laway siguro.”
Gonzales said that after three days since he went to the cockfight on mArch 15, he has already experienced the COVID-19 symptoms. He was immediately isolated and at the same time, he was worried about the health of his family.
He grasps to the Lord, but he felt that he was discouraged that he might be survived and lost his family. Adding the negative comments of people on social media added his sadness.
Good thing that after more than 20 days in the isolation facility, he managed to recover and he thanked the government for answering the hospital bill of more than P700,000.
Also, he was grateful to God and to the frontliners for doing there best for him to recover from the deadly coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
