WHO Gives New Official Name of Coronavirus “COVID-19”

Coronavirus, the disease that caused the people panic for the sickness brought about infecting more than 42,000 people in China has now received a new official name from the World Health Organization (WHO), the new name of coronavirus or the 2019-nCoV is dubbed as COVID-19.

According to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the “co” refers to “corona”, the “vi” to “virus”, the “d” to “disease”, and the “19” to the year it was first recorded. The new name COVID-19 came up to avoid pointing the disease to a certain group of people, location, or animal species.

“We had to find a name that did not refer to a geographical location, an animal, or an individual or group of people,” Ghebreyesus said

Recently, the COVID-19 had killed the lives of more than 1,000 people from all affected countries but most of death cases are from the mainland of China.

COVID-19 represented the deadly disease that potentially affecting the country and even to the extent of the political aspect, economy and social well-being of the society.

 The virus was thought originated in Wuhan City in China and authorities named “Wuhan coronavirus” or sounds like “China Coronavirus” but these are just temporary names knowing that these name can contribute discrimination to the Chinese people.
