It’s Pacquiao’s first fight since his controversial defeat to Jeff Horn in July 2017. A unanimous decision in favor for Horn (117-111, 115-113, 115-113), which shocked many people at the time. However, five independent judges from the World Boxing Organization reviewed the bout and scored it in favor for Horn as well.
Fighting Matthysse will offer Pacquiao an opportunity to atone for that defeat, and he already has his next fight lined up should he beat Matthysse.
Michael Koncz, Pacquiao’s adviser, said in an ESPN interview with Dan Rafael that Filipino boxer Pacquaio is a formidable opponent to WBO junior lightweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko. A 10-1 record on Lomachenko’s career and has a match with Jorge Linares on May 12 in New York City.
Before he can get there, Pacquiao will need to overcome Matthysse, which is easy to be said than done. The fact Pacquiao let the judges decide his fight with Horn illustrated how much he has weakened in the ring.
