Beauty Gonzalez’s jewelry, which she wore to the GMA Gala 2023 on Saturday, July 22, is still being discussed on social media.

A cultural critic told Beauty that the centuries-old gold necklace and earrings she’s wearing originated from “excavated eye and mouth covers from distant places like Butuan and Surigao.”

Their sign is claimed to be 800 to 1000 years old.

“Well, I just wanna showcase like a Philippine gold so I’m wearing a Philippine ancestral gold right now,” she explained.

“This is like 800 to 1000 years old, pre-colonial, excavated, and you can see this at Ayala Museum, and National Museum in the Philippines, and it really speaks of who I am since… I am really into Philippine antiques and contemporary,” Beauty Gonzalez continued.

I’m proud to be Filipino, so I’ve been collecting this for years,” she added.

Despite the admiration for Beauty’s gold jewelry, Marian Pastor Roces, a cultural critic and independent curator, questioned it.

He said Beauty’s jewelry was “grave robber stuff,” or supposedly stolen from the belongings of old deceased people.
