Psoriasis is characterized by patches of thick, red skin with silvery scales. Patches are most commonly found on the elbows, knees, scalp, lower back, face, palms, and soles of the feet, but they can appear anywhere (fingernails, toenails, and mouth). Plaque psoriasis is the most common type of psoriasis.

According to Dr. Jean Marquez, who uses psoriasis medication, it is not the “first line of treatment.”

“Usually, sinubukan muna ng pamahid at phototherapy. ‘Yan muna ang first line. And of course, may mga alternative din na mga treatments na maaaring pwedeng gawin, na mga lifestyle modification,” Marquez responded to the customer who submitted the psoriasis issue.

If the skin disease does not help enhance after applying the ointment, phototherapy, and making lifestyle changes, the doctor will prescribe medicine.

“Ngayon kapag hindi na talaga siya nag-improve dun, dun na tayo magbibigay ng mga oral medications,” the doctor explained. “And most of these oral medications will control the inflammation, ‘yung pamamaga, pamumula and ‘yung immune reaction ng katawan dun sa balat.”

Immunosuppressants are oral medications that are given to patients. Because they are potent and may cause adverse effects, Marquez stressed that they should only be administered under the supervision of the dermatologist.

“At meron ding mga injectables. Ang tawag dun ay mga biologics. Ganoon din ang kaniyang action. And usually, sa severe psoriasis at psoriatic arthritis, ito ang binibigay,” she explained.
