Rodrigo Duterte’s administration started at noon on June 30, 2016, with his inauguration as the Philippines’ 16th president, succeeding Benigno Aquino III, and lasted six years, from June 30, 2016, to June 30, 2022.

Duterte expanded his war against terrorism and communist insurgency. He signed the contentious Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 and presided over the five-month-long Battle of Marawi, imposing martial rule over Mindanao and extending it for two years to maintain the island’s stability.

He initially pursued peace talks with the Communist Party of the Philippines and appointed several left-leaning individuals to government positions before canceling all negotiations in February 2017 in response to attacks and kidnappings of soldiers by New Peoples Army rebels, officially declaring the CPP-NPA a terrorist organization.

He established a task force to terminate local communist armed conflict and the Task Force Balik-Loob to reintegrate former communist rebels. He signed the Bangsamoro Organic Law into law (BOL).
