DOH Confirms Hong Kong-Based Filipino Tested Positive With New COVID-19 Variant

The Department of Health (DOH) confirmed on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 that one of our Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) from Cagayan Valley contracted the new variant of COVID-19 disease.

DOH noted that the 30-year-old female OFW, whose occupation was not revealed, is on stable condition and in isolation center in Hong Kong as of writing.

According to report, the OFW arrived in Hong Kong on December 22, 2020 she complied the basic requirements as necessary testing but result was negative. The following couple of days, on January 2, 2021, again she underwent testing with the RT-PCR where her swab tests result returns positive and she was detected with UK variant COVID-19, the DOH said.

For the benefits of the doubt and worries, we have indicated here the timeline and travel history of the OFW.

  • December 17: She left Cagayan Valley Region.
  • December 18: She arrived in Metro Manila and underwent quarantine as per workplace protocol.
  • December 19: She got tested for COVID-19 as a requirement in her workplace. She tested negative. 
  • December 22: She left for Hong Kong and underwent quarantine upon arrival.
  • January 2: She underwent RT-PCR testing again where the swabs tested positive and detected to also be positive for the UK variant.

In Hong Kong, there 4 detected cases of the new variant of COVID-19 disease in their country. This includes the 30-year-old Filipina OFW, a resident in their country who has travel history from Manila on December 22, 2020 via PR 300. The said Filipina woman marked as case 9003 in Hong Kong.

The two other cases among the 4 in Hong Kong were from London, while the other one from France.
