What Next? ABS-CBN Franchise Expires Today May 4, 2020

The legislative franchise of ABS-CBN expires today, Monday, May 4, 2020. The Kapamilya Network is waiting congressional action regarding the bill for the renewal of their franchise.

According to report published by the Philstar.com there are 11 bills on the networks franchise renewal waiting for the approval from the House of Representative’ legislative franchises.

In a previous report, Alan Peter Cayetano said that there is no intention to close down the Kapamilya Network.

Cayetano citing the National Telecommunications Commission to allow the Kapamilya Network continue operation while franchise renewal bill is pending in the Congress.

As to recall, Cayetano and Rep. Franz Alvarez in Palawan, chair of committee on legislative franchises was writing to the NTC to issue provisional authority in favor to the ABS-CBN to continue operate from May 4, 2020 until the time the Congress comes up with the decision on their application of renewal of franchise.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra introduced the idea of issuing a concurrent resolution from the Congress during the Senate inquiry into ABS-CBN franchise renewal and the network’s supposed violations.

Guevara said that the Congress can issue provisional authorization to ABS-CBN stating that the network may continue operate while application of renewal is pending in the Congress.

Meanwhile, National Telecommunications Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba told the House legislative panel on March 10 that it would heed DOJ’s advice on allowing ABS-CBN to operate beyond May 4.
