Update of Taal Volcano eruption on January 14, 2020 – the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology issued Alert Level 4 over Taal Volcano until today.
PHIVOLCS Director Renato Solidum, told reporter, on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, that Taal Volcano eruption triggers about 240 quakes as per record of PHIVOLCS. Solidum said, 140 of the quakes activities were felt near Taal Volcano with 4.1 magnitude is the highest recorded earthquake incidents. Solidum also noted that the rising of magma could activate fissures leading to earthquake activities. He added that spewing of lava fountains on Monday is a sign of magma rising.
Solidum also told reporter that they have not found any signs of lowering the volcanic activity and tremors of Taal Volcano prompting Alert Level 4 warning remain until today.
The agency intensifies warning advisory of total evacuation within 14-kolometers radius from Taal Volcano for the hazard of life.
According to Solidum, the possible worst case scenario aside from spewing ash upwards, there would be rocks falling and ash crossing the lake, this will be possible to happen if there would be lot of magma coming out from Taal Volcano.
Another worst case scenario mentioned by Solidum in a report is the possible occurrence of pyroclastic density current which is a thick cloud of hot gas and volcanic substance moving horizontally to the mainland from the crater that based on their mapping it would reach up to 14-kilometers distance. The possible incident would affect coastal towns including Lemery and Taal, Solidum said.
He also issued advisory to the Civil aviation authorities that aircraft must avoid the airspace within the reach of Taal Volcano eruption as airborne ash and ballistic fragments will cause hazards to the aircraft.
There would also be a possible occurrence of volcanic tsunami in Caldera Lake like of Taal Lake, water displacing and deformation of the lake floor due to the rising of magma.
