Sen. Loren Legarda pushes P75 Food Budget for the Country’s Prisoner

The ongoing operations of the Philippine National Police against an anti-illegal drugs campaign to eliminate all illegal drug trade and criminality in the country are one of the reasons why our Philippine jails are getting congested.

PNP officials all around the country confirmed that most of the jails in the Philippines become populated and they suffered food shortage inside the jails.

Legarda being the head of the Senate committee on finance has called for a higher food budget for individuals inside the prison cell from P50 to P75 per day.  The senator gives her side towards the limited funding of individual prisoners all around the country.  She believes prisoners also deserve a “humane” meals even while serving time for criminal offenses.

According to reports, Sen. Legarda brought up the issue to raise the budget for prison food during a budget briefing with Department of Justice (DOJ) officials on Thursday.  She was surprised to know that inmates were given a P50 budget for three meals a day.

Recent reports from Inquirer.net, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II agreed to the idea of Senator Legarda saying food supplied to prisoners were no better than animal feed.
