In the third round of the Asian qualifiers for the FIBA World Cup, Gilas Pilipinas defeated India 79-63 at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday.
The Nationals earned a wire-to-wire victory to move to 2-2 days after their humiliation at the hands of the Kiwis in Auckland.
The Filipinos, headed by Dwight Ramos and Kiefer Ravena, quickly took a double-digit lead. They led 21-10 at the end of the opening frame.
In the second quarter, the Philippines’ attack kept humming along, as they increased their advantage to as much as 21 points.
With the exception of the fourth volley, where India’s 10-4 start reduced the home team’s lead to 15, 54-69, despite reaching highs of as many as 24 points, the Indians scarcely put a dent in Gilas’ lead.
With 21 points, five rebounds, two assists, and four steals, Ramos starred for the Gilas.
In addition, Ravena had 12 points, four assists, two rebounds, and two steals.
With nine points and nine rebounds, Carl Tamayo nearly had a double-double. Moreover, he committed three thefts.
Muin Bek Hafeez led all scorers for India with 13 points.
