This week, a country music single with an artificial intelligence-generated male singer’s voice debuted at the top of the US charts.
According to data released on Monday, “Walk My Walk” by Breaking Rust, an anonymous artist who has been widely claimed by US media to be driven by generative AI technology, reached the #1 spot on Billboard magazine’s chart ranking digital sales of country songs.
Country music, a distinctively American genre made famous by performers like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, and Garth Brooks, is not an exception to the trend of AI-generated songs making their way onto the charts.
Breaking Rust makes no claims about using AI to create their hit song on their social media and streaming accounts.
However, the music industry has labeled Breaking Rust an AI artist because the group’s graphics, pictures, and clips were obviously produced by artificial intelligence, and the voice on the song is not linked to any singer’s name.
The likelihood that “Walk My Walk” was a song created by artificial intelligence ranged from 60 to 90 percent, according to a number of AI music detection software programs that AFP used.
Aubierre Rivaldo Taylor, whose name only appears online in connection with the group Def Beats AI, which is unmistakably identifiable as an AI project, is listed as the songwriter in the credits.
An AFP request for comment on Tuesday was not immediately answered by the creators of the Breaking Rust Instagram profile.
Artificial intelligence-generated music has been increasingly popular on streaming services since the introduction of music-focused AI generative platforms like Suno or Udio.
After one of Velvet Sundown’s songs received more than a million plays, the project’s authors acknowledged in July that the iconic rock band was, in fact, an AI creation.
Whether it’s the debut of the so-called AI actress Tilly Norwood or the online outcry over Coca-Cola’s use of AI in their Christmas advertisements, any creative materials created with the use or help of AI are closely examined.
Multiple petitions have been started to prohibit the use of AI in specific fields, and prominent singers like Sir Elton John and Dua Lipa are among those spearheading the push for AI regulations.
The artist’s bio on Linktree says, “Music for the fighters and the dreamers.” However, not much is currently known about Breaking Rust.
