Renowned photographer and cinematographer Romy V. Vitug has passed away at the age of 86, as announced by his daughter, Dana Vitug Taylor, on January 18. She remembered him not only as a “legendary cinematographer” who made significant contributions to Philippine cinema but also as their beloved father. Dana requested prayers for their family as they navigate the grief of losing their dearly beloved father, expressing love and stating that it’s not a goodbye but a farewell until they meet again. The cause of his death was not disclosed, but last month, his daughter Dolor revealed he was hospitalized due to anemia and pneumonia.
Various members of the creative community, including writer Jerry Gracio, director Joven Tan, and cinematographer Luke Miraflor, mourned Vitug’s passing on social media. Tan fondly remembered Vitug as his first Director of Photography (DOP), thanking him for his support and guidance throughout their collaboration. Miraflor shared how Vitug inspired him to join the film industry, recalling encouraging words that motivated him to continue despite initial nerves. Gracio expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with Vitug on the film “Itlog,” which earned accolades for Best Cinematography and Visual Design. He also emphasized their friendship beyond professional collaborations.
