The talent manager-vlogger complained on social media about how expensive red onions, or “sibuyas,” cost at the market.
Red onions are a common ingredient in many Filipino dishes but are now selling for P600-P750 per kilogram, and many online users are complaining that they can no longer afford them.
Recall that former senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan asserted that the cost of “sibuyas” in the nation was more than in other nations he had visited.
Even well-known chef Judy Ann Santos had complained the rise in onion prices.
Ogie Diaz was one of the most recent people to express dissatisfaction with the rise in onion prices.
“Wow! Php600 na pala ang kilo ng sibuyas, totoo ba? Mas mahal pa sa kilo ng karneng baboy at baka? Paano kaya gawin yung sinigang na sibuyas na may sahog na baboy?” he noted in an IG story.
Meanwhile, based on the data retrieved by the Department of Agriculture (DA)- headed by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., the prices of red onions continue to surge, reaching up to P720 per kilo on Wednesday, December 28.
According to DA’s most recent monitoring, Metro Manila market prices for local red onions per kilo range from P500 to P720, which is seven times more expensive than half a year ago.
On the other hand, the cost of a kilogram of local white onions is currently 600 pesos.
The DA stated earlier this month that despite efforts to resolve the issue, continuous price increases have remained.
