The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) revealed on Monday that six persons were de@d and 19 were missing as a result of the Christmas Day rain and floods. According to a report issued by the agency at 11 a.m., four individuals reportedly died in Mindanao’s Misamis Occidental and two in Bicol’s Camarines Sur.

The victims were all drowned. According to the NDRRMC, ten of the missing are from Bicol, six from Eastern Visayas, and three from Northern Mindanao. Three persons were also reported to have been hurt.

“The waters rose above the chest in some areas, but today the rains have ceased,” civil defense worker Robinson Lacre told AFP by phone from Gingoog city.

Rain and floods produced by the shearing line, or the meeting of hot and cold air, have hit 262 barangays in Mimaropa, Bicol, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga, and Northern Mindanao, according to the NDRRMC. About 21 residences were demolished, while 27 were damaged severely.

From May through October, the summer monsoon provides torrential rainfall to the majority of the archipelago. Annual average rainfall ranges from 5,000 millimeters (197 in) in the country’s hilly east coast to less than 1,000 millimeters (39 in) in parts of the country’s protected valleys.
