NTC Issues Another Suspension Order Against SMNI

NewsInsider

On Monday, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) took further action against Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI) by issuing another cease and desist order. This decision was prompted by SMNI’s failure to “strictly comply” with the initial suspension order issued in December.

According to the NTC, reports indicated that SMNI continued its operations in certain areas of Region 7 (Central Visayas) as late as December 27, 2023. In response, the NTC emphasized the need to safeguard the public interest and welfare, stating that, “[SMNI] should be prevented in the meantime or during the pendency of this case from operating its radio and television stations.”

The regulatory body had previously imposed a 30-day suspension order on SMNI in December and required the media company to provide a written explanation for alleged franchise violations. The NTC expressed concern over the absence of a response from SMNI, stating, “The commission has still yet to receive the respondent’s answer or any written explanation as to why it should not be administratively sanctioned for having allegedly violated the conditions of its authorities.”
