Batangas Mayor Norberto Segunial Jr. Urges State of Health Emergency Amid Rising Vog-Related Illnesses

NewsInsider

Mayor Norberto Segunial Jr. of Sta. Teresita, Batangas, is making a fervent appeal for the declaration of a state of health emergency in the region. This urgent call comes in response to the growing number of illnesses that have been attributed to vog, a noxious volcanic smog produced by the emission of sulfur dioxide from the nearby Taal Volcano. The situation has become increasingly concerning as more residents experience health issues related to the hazardous vog, prompting Mayor Segunial to seek immediate measures to safeguard the well-being of his community.

Dr. Voltaire Guadalupe, the head of Disaster Risk Reduction Management in Health for the Department of Health (DOH) Calabarzon, has noted that despite the rising cases of illnesses attributed to volcanic smog from Taal Volcano in Batangas, there is currently no compelling justification to declare a public health emergency. While the situation is undoubtedly concerning, the DOH is closely monitoring the situation and assessing the extent of the health impact on the affected residents. Dr. Guadalupe’s statement underscores the need for a thorough evaluation of the situation to determine the appropriate response while ensuring that the health and safety of the community remain paramount.

According to the report from the Disaster Risk Reduction Management in Health of DOH Calabarzon, the impact of volcanic smog has been felt across multiple provinces in the region. In Batangas, a total of 638 individuals have reported illnesses related to the volcanic smog. Additionally, there have been 49 cases in Cavite, 16 cases in Laguna, and 11 cases in Rizal. These statistics underscore the widespread health concerns arising from the emissions of sulfur dioxide by Taal Volcano and highlight the need for continued vigilance and proactive measures to address the situation in these affected areas.
