May 11, 2022 – I welcome the announcement by Presidential frontrunner Bongbong Marcos that incoming Vice President Sara Duterte will concurrently serve as Department of Education Secretary.
I and the DepEd family are ready to work with her team for the orderly transition of DepEd leadership. We will turn over the Basic Education Plan 2030, the first time that an outgoing administration will leave behind a medium-term plan. We are confident that DepEd will be in able hands and anticipate a continuity.

In 2010, Duterte was elected mayor of Davao City, succeeding her father, Rodrigo Duterte, as mayor and vice mayor, respectively. She became the city’s first female mayor and the youngest person elected to the role in Davao City’s political history. She took up the job that her father Rodrigo had held for nearly 20 years, vowing to be “useful and to serve the country at all times.” Dutertes has defended political dynasties in the Philippines, claiming that their almost four decades of unchallenged reign in Davao was the result of a “democratic” process.
The Department of Education (DepEd) formulates, implements, and coordinates policies, plans, programs and projects in the areas of formal and non-formal basic education.
The mission of DepEd is to protect and promote the right of every Filipino to quality, equitable, culture-based, and complete basic education where: Students learn in a child-friendly, gender-sensitive, safe, and motivating environment. Teachers facilitate learning and constantly nurture every learner.
