MAYON VOLCANO – Magmatic activity is occurring beneath the Mayon Volcano structure in Albay province, said Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Friday.

Based on PHIVOLCS’ Mayon bulletin, slight inflammation at the summit was observed and the volcano continued to emit white steam, indicating magmatic activity underneath, as of the report on GMA news.

PHIVOLCS has also recorded one volcanic earthquake in the last 24 hours.

According to the PHIVOLCS, Mayon Volcano was still at Alert Level 2, which means that it is under moderate unrest.

Moreover, residents near the volcano are strictly prohibited from straying into the volcano’s 6-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ).

Recalling, in late June, the PHIVOLCS also reported that hydrothermal or magmatic activity was occurring beneath the Kanlaon Volcano edifice on Negros Island in Western Visayas.

The Kanlaon Volcano recorded moderate emission of white steam-laden plumes that rose 200 meters before drifting northwest. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission was measured at an average of 237 tonnes per day on 24 June 2020.
