The Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) are now starting to install 34 Wi-Fi hotspots in the city of Manila, these hotspots will be placed near the city’s universities. The Manila Mayor Isko Moreno has signed a deal that provides free Wi-Fi in six (6) areas in the city. According to the Manila Public Information Office (PIO), these hotspots are likened to those located in Manhattan, New York.
“Ang mga WiFi hotspot terminal ay nakaplanong ilagay sa kahabaan ng España at paikot sa buong University Belt para sa kapakinabangan ng mga estudyante,” stated the Manila PIO.
Currently, the Manila City government started to implement its goal of making the city a Center of Convenience” and a “Smart City”. Last August 2019, the Manila City government also installed a kiosk outside of the Manila City Hall that serves as a free Wi-Fi hotspot, a charging station, and a phone booth.
The concept of this WIFI Hotspot came from LinkNYC Wi-Fi phone kiosks in Manhattan, New York. The installation of this thirty-four (34) Wi-Fi hotspot terminals can help the students and workers in saving money. Isko Moreno also stated that there will be an additional installation of CCTV cameras around the U-Belt to ensure the safety of students.
