Internet Provider Requests To PPC To Evaluate 700 MHz Usage

The internet society of the Philippines urge the (PPC) Philippine Competition Commission to look unto the necessity of the 700 MHz frequency in the country as it reviews the sale of diversified conglomerate San Miguel Corp’s Telco assets to Globe Telecom and PLDT.

In the letter they wrote, they said that 700 MHz is not enough and necessary to have a good internet service. While the 700 MHz has been describe as the key to faster and better coverage, ISOC claimed that on the contrary, the 700 MHz is actually ‘slower’ than higher frequencies.

“First, because its capacity to carry information is less than that of higher frequencies, the 700 MHz is actually ‘slower’ than higher frequencies. Secondly, while 700 MHz mat be said to have a better coverage than higher frequencies, it does so at the expense of other desirable properties such as capacity, mentioned above. What is clear is that though the properties of various frequency bands may differ, 700 MHz has no special or magical properties as against other frequency bands, particularly adjoining (850 and 900 MHz) which would have properties similar to 700 MHz”. ISOC said in its letter to the Commission.
