In the midst of continuous conversations about objectifying women online, actor and current Bulacan vice governor Alex Castro spoke out on Monday in support of women’s freedom of dress.
Castro emphasized that performers’ clothes are a part of the event, citing his wife, who is a member of the Sexbomb Girls.
The online discussion over objectifying women started when Alvin Aragon publicly said that husbands should never permit their wives to wear anything revealing in order to prevent sexualization. The discussion continued after Quezon City legislator Bong Suntay made offensive comments about Anne Curtis.
Sexbomb Sunshine Garcia’s husband, actor and current Bulacan vice governor Alex Castro, stated to ABS-CBN News on Monday, “Walang restrictions sa pananamit [si Sunshine],” in reference to men dictating what women should wear.
The actor-public servant said that since costumes are a part of the show, there is nothing wrong with performers dressing however they like, using the Sexbomb girls as examples.
Castro was one of the Sexbomb husbands that garnered the greatest admiration from online users during the Aragon public drama. They referred to him as an example of what a real husband ought to be.
Then, in relation to the subject of society’s disapproval of women’s clothing, he disclosed how his wife had experienced body shaming.
Castro’s vocal backing of his wife has won him praise on the internet.
A source close to ABS-CBN News revealed at the end of the interview that Castro is currently being urged to run for governor in the next elections. Castro said, “Nung pumasok ako sa politics — 23 years ago — wala akong kamag-anak sa politics. Nagsimula lang akong SK chairman ng isang maliit na barangay. Ngayon, pinakabatang vice governor. Unfair sa mga kababayan na pag-usapan ang governorship sa panahon ngayon na marami tayong pinagdaraanan.”
He ended, “I think it’s unfair na sasagutin ko kung oo or hindi. Sa akin lang, kung anong ibigay ni Lord, I’m ready. Ito talaga ‘yung ibinigay ni Lord na mission ko. Hindi ko naman mararating ito kung hindi ako ginabayan ng mga tamang tao”
