Filipino-American comedian Jo Koy offered insights into his controversial joke about pop star Taylor Swift during the 81st Golden Globe Awards ceremony.
Jo Koy has garnered immense pride among the Filipino community for spotlighting Philippine culture on a global stage. Throughout his performances, he takes pride in sharing his roots, often centering his humor around his Filipina mom and their family.
Notably, in one of his Netflix specials, Jo Koy showcased the Philippines and highlighted Filipino artists such as Inigo Pascual. His film, “Easter Sunday,” further delved into the dynamics of a Filipino family.
Nevertheless, following his hosting duties at the Golden Globes, Jo Koy faced criticism, even from Filipinos, for delivering jokes that were deemed inappropriate, particularly the one involving Taylor Swift and the National Football League (NFL).
“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift,” Jo Koy said.
Taylor displayed clear dissatisfaction with the joke. She maintained a stoic expression, pursed her lips, and sipped her drink following the Fil-Am comedian’s remark. The incident drew criticism on social media, with netizens condemning Jo and expressing disapproval of his delivery style.
According to the Philstar article, the Fil-Am comedian acknowledged the criticisms directed at his hosting performance and recognized the challenges that come with the job. Nevertheless, he emphasized that despite the difficulties, he genuinely enjoyed his inaugural experience hosting an awards night.
“It’s a tough room. It was a hard job. I hit a moment there where I was like, ‘Ah.’ Hosting is just a tough gig. It was a crash course. I feel bad, but I got to still say I loved what I did,” he said.
Jo revealed that he was tasked with the job just 10 days before the event. Within that brief timeframe, he and his team had to craft his monologue for the occasion.
“But it was more on the NFL,” he said. “I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways and how the Globes didn’t have to do that. So it was more of a jab toward the NFL. But it just didn’t come out that way,” Jo Koy explained.
