Olivia Dean, a British singer-songwriter whose massive hit song “Man I Need” topped charts both at home and abroad, won the Grammy for Best New Artist on Sunday.
The “Ordinary” singer Alex Warren, the girl group Katseye, the singer-turned-TikTok dancer Addison Rae, The Marias, sombr, Lola Young, and Leon Thomas were among the many competitors she defeated.
“I’m up here as a granddaughter of an immigrant,” Dean — who was born in London to an English father and a Jamaican-Guyanese mother — remarked to cheers.

In September, the 26-year-old Dean made waves with the release of her second studio album, “The Art of Loving.” Her deep pop-soul sound has won over critics.
Its main hit “Man I Need” soared to number one in the UK, Australia and abroad. In the US, it peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100.
The other singles from the album, “Nice to Each Other” and “Lady Lady,” have jazz-infused tunes that evoke nostalgia.
Billboard named her the Rookie of the Year for 2025.
Dean’s middle name is Lauryn — for rap legend and Fugees lead singer Lauryn Hill.
She initially went a performing arts secondary school for musical theater, but then switched to songwriting, taught herself to play the guitar and piano.
Dean first became well-known by sharing covers on YouTube and attracting listeners with her vintage voice on streaming services.
Following the release of an EP in 2019, she drove about in a yellow van during the height of the pandemic in the summer of 2020, performing outside for anyone who would listen.
Two additional EPs followed before her debut full-length album in 2023, “Messy.”
Dean’s career took off, and in 2024 he performed at the renowned Glastonbury Festival.
She opened for Sabrina Carpenter on her tour late last year, riding on the success of “The Art of Loving”.
Dean lists a variety of influences, including Aretha Franklin, Carole King, Hill, and Amy Winehouse.
