Monty Macalino, the lead singer of Mayonnaise, explained the meaning behind their popular song “Jopay.”
Jopay by Mayonnaise has resurfaced on social media almost two decades after it was first played. The song is a part of the “Ngayon Kaya” official soundtrack from 2022, which stars Paulo Avelino and Janine Gutierrez. In the second half of 2022, it was made available on Netflix, and it has since grown in popularity.
The song that was widely shared on social media earlier this year was hilariously performed by TikTok creator Kosang Marlon. Many online users mimicked Marlon’s performance of the song “Jopay’s” lyrics, “Wag ka nang mawala,” and some claimed to be suffering from “last-song syndrome” (LSS) as a result of his hilarious cover.
“Pagbukas ko ng TV nakita ko yung isang S*xBomb dancer (Jopay) umiiyak sabi ko, ‘ba’t kaya umiiyak ‘to ‘di ba nasayaw lang ‘to?’ So pumasok sa utak ko parang ‘ayaw ko siya makitang umiyak, ayoko siyang makitang malungkot,’”
the singer stated.
“So ginawa ko talaga yung kanta specifically for Jopay ng S*xbomb dancers…”
“I wanted to create a song na would make as if we have a connection. Even if she doesn’t know me. Even if I haven’t seen her face to face,”
Monty continued.
Since then, the dancer has won the heart of Monty Macalino. Additionally, Monty acknowledged that he frequently watched Jopay on “Eat Bulaga” from the Broadway Centrum in Quezon City.
“Pumupunta [at] pumipila ako doon [sa studio at] manood ako ng Eat Bulaga. Nakikiupo kami sa Kurimaw (band) kami ng kaibigan ko,”
he stated.
Additionally, Monty claimed that he delivered the first demo to Jopay outside the “Eat Bulaga” studio. When choosing a song for the debut album, Monty was hesitant to include “Jopay” because it departs from the rock and metal genres.
Mayonnaise played the song again in 2005 and also produced a music video for it. This was well-liked and well-known on the radio. The dancer was supposed to be in the video, but Monty claimed she was preoccupied with a performance in Japan.
