After a six-week trial, the jury determined that Depp and Heard had defamed each other, but sided heavily with the “Pirates of the Caribbean” celebrity.
After approximately two days of deliberation, jurors determined on Wednesday that Ms. Heard’s assertions about her marriage were “false” and that she behaved with “actual malice.”
They also discovered that Mr. Depp defamed Ms. Heard when his lawyer told the Daily Mail in 2020 that her abuse accusations were a fake.
Screams and cries of “Johnny, Johnny, Johnny” erupted outside the court as the seven-member jury announced their judgment.
Mr. Depp’s spokesperson stated that he was unable to attend court due to “previously scheduled work commitments.” The actor was said to be watching from the United Kingdom, where he has performed three unexpected concerts along with his friend, British musician Jeff Beck, because the jury started discussing on Friday.
Johnny Depp, who’s been in England for a few days, was not present in court for the judgement in the high-profile trial that depended on lurid charges and counterclaims of domestic violence between the Hollywood superstars.
“The disappointment I feel today is beyond words,” she said in a statement. “I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband.
“I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women,” Heard said. “It is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated.
“It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously” Heard added.
In a statement on Wednesday, Depp stated: “The jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled.”
He added, in Latin: “Truth never perishes“
