Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Danilo Lim has passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, report confirmed by the Malacañang Palace Spokesperson Harry Roque.

Danny Lim died at around 8:00 a.m. Wednesday morning at the age of 65. Lim was reportedly tested positive for the deadly Covid-19 virus since last December 29, 2020. Report said that Lim got infected of the virus due to the nature of his work in a daily routine screening as a frontliner. According to the report, Lim started experiencing mild symptoms and followed medical advisory to go on isolation.

In an interview, Roque left a message to the late MMDA chairman saying, “May the perpetual light shine upon him, and may his soul, through the mercy of the Almighty, rest in eternal peace,” he said. 

It can be remembered that Lim was appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte on 2017 to his office for three (3) years in service until his death. Lim was a former high-ranking official of the military department until President Duterte tapped him to join his administration.

Presidential Chief Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo gives his remark about Chairman Lim as fearless in fighting for what he believes in, especially in the line of the political concerns and related issues.

In previous experience of Lim in the government office, he serves as customs deputy commissioner for intelligence under the administration of Duterte’s predecessor, former President Benigno Aquino III, but resigned in 2013 due to “powerful forces” which he said affected his mandate to capture smugglers and institute reforms in the bureau.

In 2010, Lim ran for a Senate seat as an independent candidate and eventually as part of the Liberal Party but lost. 

“Lim retired as a Brigadier General, most people knows him as a man of principle and a true gentleman. Until his age, he maintained his good reputation having unblemished character who highly regarded the value of hard work that served as the foundation for President Duterte’s decision to appoint him as the Chairman of the MMDA,” he added. 

The office he left is now vacant, Malacañang has yet to say who would take over Lim’s post.
