An Android phone advertised by Indian company Ringing Bells that cost only at 251 rupees (£2.77) named as Freedon 251 has made to be the world’s cheapest smart phone. Regardless for its price the specification are quite impressive. A 4-inch display, 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, and a 1,450 mAh battery. It comes with a 3.2-megapixel rear camera and a 0.3-megapixel front camera. The phone also comes with 8GB of internal storage, which can be expanded by another 32GB using a microSD card.
Freedom 251 will run on Android Lollipop 5.1 and comes pre-installed with several apps. Besides Facebook, YouTube, Google Play and WhatsApp, it has apps that will be useful to farmers, fishermen and women, such as Swachh Bharat, Farmer, Medical and Women Safety. The company says the final model will be made available for observation only after 30 June.
Some people are worrying and questions are being asked about whether the company will be able to deliver the millions of handsets it says it can. One member of the Indian parliament, Kirit Somaiya, has even suggested a”huge scam” is being perpetrated, while the head of the Indian Cellular Association has said the sale seemed to be “a joke or a scam”. However the founder and chief executive of Ringing Bells Mohit Goel denies the allegations of fraud. Ringing Bells has said that the phone comes with a one-year warranty and be serviced at over 650 centres across the country.
