Shortly after the judgment in the highly publicized defamation lawsuit between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, which favored the former, Depp’s iconic character Jack Sparrow became a hot topic on Twitter, with social media users calling for his reinstatement to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.

One commenter chastised Disney for letting Depp leave the franchise despite his being the face of the movie and carrying them through dwindling critical acclaim and box office revenues.

“He was literally the only reason I bothered to watch [Pirates] 4 and 5. I will not watch 6 if he isn’t in it, period.”

“I’m not watching any Disney ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies without Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow,” said another user.

On a lighter note, several internet users demanded that Disney publicly apologize to Depp and expedite the process of reintroducing him to the series, while others noted that the firm should also apologize to fans for the loss of a fan favorite.

Many commenters joked, “Remember this day as the day you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow,” a reference to one of Depp’s lines in the films; others specifically identified Heard as the one “who almost caught” Sparrow.

The seven-member jury awarded Depp $15 million (P787.4 million) in damages after concluding that Heard’s 2018 article about her experience with “sexual violence” was defamatory to the actor and ex-husband Depp, who was watching the proceedings from the United Kingdom. Depp later posted on Instagram that the jury “gave me my life back.”
