MANILA — in preparation of the upcoming Christmas season, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) conducted clearing operations in Manila on Thursday.
Before the holiday rush, the MMDA’s Special Operations Group–Strike Force patrolled a number of Tondo streets, including Tayuman, Zaragoza, and Moriones streets, to clear obstacles and guarantee better traffic flow.
“Our goal is to create a safer and more efficient travel environment for commuters and motorists during the busy holiday period,” MMDA spokesperson Atty. Celine Pialago said in a statement. “We urge the public to cooperate by observing traffic rules and refraining from illegal parking.”
In addition to clearing operations, the MMDA announced plans to implement stricter traffic management schemes in high-traffic zones, particularly near shopping centers and markets known to draw large crowds during the Christmas season.
The agency will also increase the number of traffic enforcers and deploy additional tow trucks to swiftly remove vehicles causing bottlenecks. Special attention will be given to transport terminals, parking areas, and intersections prone to heavy traffic buildup.
The MMDA reminded vendors and motorists to comply with ordinances prohibiting obstruction of pedestrian sidewalks and roadways.
“We understand the importance of livelihood activities during the holidays, but they should not come at the expense of public safety and smooth traffic,” Pialago emphasized. “We encourage vendors to coordinate with local government units to find designated areas for their operations.”
Motorists were also advised to plan their routes ahead and consider using public transport or carpooling to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
With Christmas festivities fast approaching, the MMDA vowed to sustain its operations and collaborate closely with local government units, the Philippine National Police, and other stakeholders to maintain order on the roads.
“We want everyone to have a joyful and stress-free holiday season, and that starts with safe and manageable traffic conditions,” the MMDA chief added.
Residents and commuters are encouraged to report traffic violations and illegal obstructions to the MMDA through their hotline and social media channels for immediate action.
