Atlanta Hawks big Onyeka Okongwu is “open” to joining the 🇵ðŸ‡/Gilas national team as a naturalized player, per sources.
Okongwu’s connection to the Philippines goes beyond mere interest. Growing up in Chino Hills, California, he was surrounded by a vibrant Filipino community, which undoubtedly fueled his affinity for the nation. Furthermore, his training alongside PBA star Alex Cabagnot and the Fil-Am Nation has deepened his roots in Philippine basketball.
While the Nigerian national team has expressed their interest in naturalizing him as well, the Philippines seems to have the advantage in this pursuit, especially considering recent complications within the Nigerian team.
Currently, Okongwu’s primary focus lies on securing a significant second contract within the NBA. He remains extension-eligible for up to five years at a value of $207 million, with the deadline set just before the NBA opening day on October 24th. However, it’s worth noting that he also has the potential to become a restricted free agent in the coming year, adding another layer of intrigue to his future in professional basketball.
During the last NBA season, Okongwu posted impressive statistics, averaging 9.9 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game while maintaining an impressive field goal percentage of 64% and a free throw percentage of 78%.
