After the 2021 release of “Music,” the singer-songwriter deleted her Twitter account and added a disclaimer. The film, about a young woman named Music who lives with her half-sister, was criticized by autistic advocates for its depiction of “calming restraints” and its casting of Maddie Ziegler (“Dance Moms”) instead of an autistic actor.

The National Autism Society tweeted, “Sia has got this one wrong.” “The acting industry is full of autistic people who are incredibly talented.”

The singer/songwriter made the announcement on a recent episode of ‘Rob Has A Podcast’ that she is “on the spectrum” and is now in rehab. Sia spoke on her time in rehab and the need of avoiding a life of secrecy and guilt. She said that she had been in rehab for drug misuse.

“I’m on the spectrum, and I’m in recovery,” Sia told Wiger. “I think one of the greatest things is nobody can ever know you and love you when you’re filled with secrets and living in shame. … For 45 years, I was like, ‘I’ve got to go put my human suit on,’ and, only in the last two years, have I become fully, fully myself.”

She did not reveal the exact timing of her diagnosis, but she did imply that it occurred within the previous two years and that doing so let her become “fully, fully myself.”

“Nobody can ever know and love you when you’re filled with secrets and living in shame. And when we finally sit in a room full of strangers and tell them our deepest, darkest, most shameful secrets, and everybody laughs along with us, and we don’t feel like pieces of trash for the first time in our lives.” Sia shared on the podcast.
