A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Daet, Camarines Norte, Bicol, Philippines, just 19 minutes ago. The tremor was recorded at a very shallow depth of 8.4 km below the surface on Wednesday, December 7th, 2022, at 1:05 p.m. local time.
The United States Geological Survey was the first seismological agency to report the event.
The earthquake was later classified as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS). The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported the same quake at magnitude 5.3, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.1, the RaspberryShake citizen-seismograph network at magnitude 5.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.2.
According to preliminary seismic data, the quake was likely felt by a large number of people in the epicenter area. Other than objects falling from shelves and broken windows, it should not have caused significant damage.
The quake should have been felt as light shaking in Sabang Indan (population 2,800), Vinzons (population 13,600) 43 km away, Jose Panganiban (population 21,200) 47 km away, Mercedes (population 17,000) 47 km away, Daet (population 78,100) 48 km away, and Labo (population 18,100) 49 km away.
Weak shaking may have been felt in Calabanga (population 26,800), 93 kilometers from the epicenter, and Magarao (population 15,200), 98 kilometers away.
