On Thursday, a woman with cerebral palsy who claims Backstreet Boys star Nick Carter rapėd her as a teenager filed a civil lawsuit against the singer in the United States.
Shannon Ruth, now 39, claims the singer forced her to have oral sėx with him on a tour bus after a concert in 2001, and then rapėd her.
Ruth, then 17, was queuing for an autograph after a Backstreet Boys show in Tacoma, Washington, when Carter invited her onto the bus, according to attorney Mark Boskovich.
“He gave her a funny tasting beverage that he called VIP juice,” Boskovich stated.
“Carter took her to the bus’s bathroom and told her to get on her knees, and he pulled down his pants and exposed his genitals ordering (her) to perform sėxual acts on her.” Boskovich added.
Ruth, a virgin at the time, cried throughout the ordeal, but Carter persisted, according to Boskovich.
“Carter took (her) to a bed in the back of the bus. He pushed her onto the bed and proceeded to rapė her, despite her please.”
Ruth, who is also autistic, stated that she would inform others about the sėxual assault.
“He grabbed and bruised her arm and screamed at her,” the lawyer said, adding that Carter referred to her as “retarded” and said “no one would ever believe in her.”
Ruth wept openly during the 30-minute press conference, despite having waived her right to anonymity, as is customary for victims of sėxual crimes.
“Even though I’m autistic and live with cerebral palsy, I believe that nothing has affected me more or had a more lasting impact on my life than what Nick Carter did and said to me,” she stated.
The civil lawsuit, filed in Las Vegas, seeks unspecified damages from the singer, whose Backstreet Boys hits include “I Want It That Way” and “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).”
According to the suit, Carter, 42, abused three other women while previously facing unproven claims of sėxual assault, which he denied.
The three were not identified, but Boskovich stated that lawyers had spoken with them.
Carter’s representatives did not respond to AFP’s inquiries.
There was no mention of the lawsuit on Carter’s Twitter or Instagram accounts, which were filled with messages honoring his late younger brother Aaron.
According to the entertainment website TMZ, an unidentified source close to the singer denied the claim.
“This accusation is categorically false; Nick is focusing on his family and mourning his brother’s dėath,” the source told the site.
