The seven-year-old crocodile wore a white gown and body ornaments to her wedding to Victor Hugo Sosa, the mayor of Oaxaca’s tiny municipality of San Pedro Huamelula. Marriage, according to Reuters, is part of the tradition that causes individuals to seek riches from nature.

The marriage of the two is thought to represent human contact with gods, which is an old ceremony of the indigenous Chontal and Huave populations of Oaxaca. The ceremony will include dancing to the backdrop of traditional music. The rite concludes with the mayor using a leash to kiss his crocodile wife on the nose.

“We ask nature for enough rain, for enough food, that we have fish in the river,” groom Sosa said.

“It gives me so much happiness and makes me proud of my roots,” said Elia Edith Aguilar, the mother who stepped up and planned the ceremony.

He said, “It’s a very beautiful tradition.”
