At least six people were killed and at least Thirty were injured when a shooter from a rooftop began shooting on a Fourth of July celebration in a Chicago suburb on Monday, according to authorities. The attack also forced hundreds of marchers, parents pushing strollers, and kids riding bikes to escape in fear.

An hour-long manhunt in and around Highland Park, a wealthy neighborhood of roughly 30,000 people on Chicago’s northern beaches, ended with the arrest of a man identified as a prime suspect in the shooting, according to officials.

The shooting on July 4th was only the most recent incident to disrupt American culture. In recent months, killing grounds have expanded to include schools, churches, supermarkets, and now community parades. This time, the carnage occurred as the country looked for an occasion to remember its founding and the ties that continue to bind it.

Ron Tuazon, a local, and a friend went back to the parade route on Monday evening to collect chairs, blankets, and a child’s bike that he and his family had left when the shooting started. “It definitely hits a lot harder when it’s not only your hometown but it’s also right in front of you,” Tuazon said.

Tuazon referred to what he described as another American tragedy as “commonplace now.” “We don’t blink anymore.” Until laws change, it’s going to be more of the same, “one person said. The shooting took place on

the parade route, where many locals had staked out great viewing areas early in the day for the traditional event. Hundreds of parade attendees fled after being hit by dozens of gunshots, some of which were clearly bleeding. They left behind a trail of abandoned belongings that demonstrated how abruptly and violently normal life was disrupted: a half-eaten bag of potato chips, a box of chocolate cookies that had been dumped on the ground, and a child’s Chicago Cubs cap.

The most comprehensive gun violence legislation approved by Congress in decades was signed by Vice President Biden, demonstrating at once both progress on a previously intractable topic and the ongoing, profound party gap.

Residents who had remained inside their houses while word of the arrest spread started coming outside, some of them heading in the direction of the gunfire. Several others paused and gazed at the scene, which still had a number of backpacks, hundreds of lawn chairs, and abandoned picnic blankets from before the gunfire started.

Despite their belief that there was just one gunman, police issued a warning that he should still be seen as dangerous and armed. Several adjacent communities postponed parades and fireworks displays while some mentioned that the Highland Park gunman was still on the loose. The Chicago White Sox also tweeted that the shooting had forced them to cancel their post-game fireworks display.

In order to find the alleged gunman, more than 100 law enforcement personnel were sent to the parade site.

On Monday, a residence in Highland Park that was listed as the address for Crimo was surrounded by more than a dozen policemen. As they focused on the house, several of the cops clutched weapons in their hands. Only a few law enforcement vehicles were let within a small outer perimeter after police blockedaded the roads leading to the house in a tree-lined area next to a golf club.
