A spokesperson for Paul Sorvino, who played gangster Paulie Cicero in the classic mob film “Goodfellas,” has died at the age of 83, according to a spokesperson for the actor.

Sorvino, who played police sergeant Phil Cerreta on the TV show “Law & Order” in the 1990s, has worked in film, television, and on stage for over 50 years.

According to the spokesperson, he died of natural causes at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.

“I am completely devastated. The love of my life & the most wonderful man who has ever lived is gone. I am heartbroken,” his wife said.

Sorvino, who was born in Brooklyn in 1939, studied music and aspired to be an opera singer before turning to acting.

His extensive career included roles in the Broadway play “That Championship Season” and a film adaptation in 1982. He also played Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in the films “Dick Tracy,” “Reds,” and “Nixon.”

Martin Scorsese cast Sorvino as Cicero, a quiet but formidable character based on real-life mobster Paul Vario, in the 1990’s “Goodfellas” at the age of 50.

Sorvino had three children, including actress Mira Sorvino, who thanked her father when she accepted her Academy Award for “Mighty Aphrodite” in 1995.

“He has taught me everything I know about acting,” she said this as she broke down in tears in front of the audience.

“My father the great Paul Sorvino has passed. My heart is rent asunder- a life of love and joy and wisdom with him is over. He was the most wonderful father. I love him so much. I’m sending you love in the stars Dad as you ascend.” Mira Sorvino said.

Mira Sorvino said on Monday that her father’s death has “ripped my heart asunder.”
