Ella Cruz’s contentious remark that “history is like gossip” in reference to her sympathy with the Marcos family’s account of their experiences during the final three days of the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. administration sparked reactions from Agot Isidro and Gretchen Ho.
In the movie Maid in Malacañang, Ella played Irene Marcos, one of Marcos Sr. children.
“History is like tsismis. It is filtered and dagdag na rin, so, hindi natin alam what is the real history. Andoon na iyong idea, pero may mga bias talaga,” remarked Ella.
“As long as we’re here alive at may kanya-kanyang opinion, I respect everyone’s opinion.”
Gretchen and Agot disagree with Ella’s claims.
“Ella, I love you and you’re the sweetest,” Agot stated (stated unchanged) (serious ako. she really is.)
“Next time, puede tayong sumagot ng, ‘No comment.’
“Again, mahal kita.”
In order to illustrate that history is based on facts and not just hearsay, Gretchen Ho provided an example of the differences between history and gossip.
Gretchen tweeted: “Facts =/= Opinion
“My coffee is black = Fact
“My coffee is bitter = Opinion
“History = Facts
“Gossip = Opinion.
While subject to the author’s perspective, Gretchen continued, “History’s narrative must be written based on facts and not opinion.”
Additionally, Gretchen included a quote from Ambeth Ocampo, a public historian from the Philippines, who said: “Real history is about truth, not lies, not fiction.”
