Constance Wu, a US actress, attempted suicide three years ago after receiving vicious criticism on social media, the “Crazy Rich Asians” star said on Thursday.
Wu, 40, came under fire in 2019 for comments she made regarding the comedy “Fresh Off the Boat,” in which she had a starring role.
Wu chose to commit herself after receiving internet backlash from those who found the comments derogatory and a letter from another Asian American actress who labeled Wu “a blight on the Asian American community.”
“I started feeling like I didn’t even deserve to live anymore. That I was a disgrace to AsAms, and they’d be better off without me,” Wu said in a statement posted Thursday on Twitter.
“Luckily, a friend found me and rushed me to the ER,” The actress wrote anonymously without elaborating.
Wu placed her career on hold and quit social media to concentrate on her mental health after surviving a suicide attempt.
But she made the decision to go back online and share her experience in order to start a larger conversation about mental health among Asian Americans.
“AsAms don’t talk about mental health enough,” Wu said.
“While we’re quick to celebrate representation wins, there’s a lot of avoidance around the more uncomfortable issues within our community.”
Wu’s tweets from 2019 came after it was announced that “Fresh Off the Boat,” a popular ABC comedy about a Taiwanese-American family trying to start over in Florida, had been renewed for a sixth season.“So upset right now that I’m literally crying. Ugh,” Wu said.
Many users criticized her for coming across as unappreciative of the success of the show.
She had also said at the time that she was furious since the show’s renewal would put her other projects on hold. Wu acknowledged in her article on Thursday that the comments were “careless.”
“Even though I’m scared, I’ve decided that I owe it to the me-of-3-years-ago to be brave and share my story so that it might help someone with theirs,” she wrote.
