Nonito Donaire of the Philippines was knocked out in the second round by Japanese sensation Naoya Inoue in their rematch on Tuesday at the Super Arena in Japan.
Nonito Donaire Jr., often recognized as The Filipino Flash, is a Filipino-American boxer. He won four world titles and is regarded as one of the best Filipino boxers of all time, having defeated outstanding competitors like Vic Darchinyan and Fernando Montiel.
The battle was for the super bantamweight titles of the World Boxing Association, the International Boxing Federation, and the World Boxing Council.
Donaire, 39 years old, used his famous left hooks to try to knock out Inoue, 29, but it was the latter’s power punches that finished the night for the Filipino boxing veteran, who was also knocked down near the end of the first round.
Inoue’s record increased to 23 wins, no losses, and 20 knockouts, while Donaire’s record slipped to 42-7 with 28 knockouts.
Naoya Inoue beat Donaire in their world title fight in Japan in 2019. Their encounter was eventually dubbed the “Fight of the Year,” as the veteran warrior showed courage by making Inoue the most difficult fight of his life.
Donaire also made headlines when he had to withdraw from a match after testing positive for COVID-19. He was supposed to box against a Puerto Rican challenger named Emmanuel Rodriguez, but the fight was put cancelled.
