The top presidential candidate, Bongbong Marcos, has revealed Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte’s position in his proposed Cabinet: Secretary of Education (DepEd).
Ferdinand Marcos Jr. revealed few details about how he will lead the Philippines ahead of his landslide election victory on Monday. However, a private dinner he attended shortly after joining the campaign last October may reveal his priorities – and to whom he is beholden.
The UniTeam consists of Sara Duterte, the president’s daughter who eventually became his running partner, and Marcos Jr., who is raised with the powerful family that controls most key positions in Cebu, a tourism hotspot.
On Wednesday, May 11, Marcos made the announcement at a live press conference at his campaign headquarters in Mandaluyong City.
“So in the next few days we will continue to keep you informed about what’s going on and I think I am already authorized by–to announce the first nominee that we will be giving to the Commisison on Appointments when the time comes should I be proclaimed. And that is that our incoming vice president has agreed to take the brief of Department of Education (DepEd),” he stated of Duterte, his campaign partner in the recently ended May 9 polls.
In the presidential and vice presidential campaigns, both Marcos and Duterte are considered to maintain unbeatable leads over their closest rivals.
“So si Inday Sara, sabi niya kaya niya–tinanong ko sa kanya kung kaya niya yung trabaho dahil mahirap ang trabaho ng secretary of education. So pero nag-agree naman siya (I asked Inday Sara if she can take on the job because the job of secretary of education is difficult. But she agreed [to accept it]),” he stated.
“At palagay ko (And I think), kasama na dyan dahil (this includes that) she is a mother, and she wants to make sure that her children are well-trained and well-educated and that is the best motivation that we can hope for,” Marcos stated.
“So that is the first announcement that I can make that has come out of this process,” Marcos added.
It is usual for the chief executive to propose a cabinet position to the vice president.
