Elon Musk will not be joining Twitter’s board of directors, the social media company’s CEO announced late Sunday, less than a week after announcing the Tesla CEO’s appointment. Musk was appointed to the Twitter board of directors after purchasing a significant investment in the company and becoming its largest owner.
“Elon has decided not to join our board,” Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal tweeted.
“Elon’s appointment to the board was to become officially effective 4/9, but Elon shared that same morning he will no longer be joining the board,” Agrawal said.
“I believe this is for the best.”
Musk, who is now the world’s richest man and has over 80 million followers on the microblogging network, said last week that he had purchased 73.5 million shares, or 9.2 percent, of Twitter’s common stock.
“Elon is our biggest shareholder and we will remain open to his input,” Agrawal stated.
Musk, the billionaire internet entrepreneur, is a regular Twitter user, usually blending heated and contentious pronouncements about topics or other prominent figures with humorous or business-related remarks.
He has also clashed with federal securities officials, who pushed down on his social media usage after an alleged attempt to take Tesla private in 2018 fell through.
