When it was launched on Netflix in early 2020, it was continuously ranked in the top ten titles in the Philippines. The 16-part series, which starred heartthrob actor Park Seo-joon and actress Kim Da-mi, followed an ex-convict, Park Sae-ro-yi (Park), whose life changes after he is expelled from school for hitting a bully and affluent heir, Jang Geun-won (Ahn Bo-hyun). Following his father’s death, Park starts a restaurant on Itaewon Street, competing with the Jang family’s large food empire.

The final episode of the series, which aired in 2020, garnered a 16.5 percent audience rate.

“The Japanese version of ‘Itaewon Class’ is significant because it can lead to more successful examples of exceptional intellectual properties (IP) traveling abroad,” stated Kakao Entertainment. “Because the IP for ‘Itaewon Class’ has significant potential, we are in negotiations to develop other versions of the series in countries other than Japan.”
