Months ago, people became aware that the shortness of breath, fever, and cough are the three most common symptoms of the coronavirus disease or COVID-19. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) later on added six more symptoms to the list such as chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, and loss of taste or smell.
Dermatologists have been looking for the possibility of other symptoms that can be shown through the skin as the World Health Organization (WHO) reported. Certain reports from dermatologists say that rashes on the toes can also be a sign that the person has contracted the disease.
According to Inquirer.net, in order identify if there are skin-related symptoms, they evaluated 88 COVID-19 patients in Italy. The results came out that 1 out of 5 total number of patients shown symptoms such as red rashes. In Spain, 375 people who tested positive also reported to have skin problems, including swelling of toes.
“One of the more surprising findings in this epidemic has been the lesions that we’re seeing on people’s toes and hands,” said Esther Freeman, the director of Global Health Dermatology at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
“It’s really important to reassure the public that most of our patients who are developing COVID toes are doing very well, so they’re often patients who have a benign clinical course. They either are having mild disease or often their only symptom might be their toes,” she added.
Medicalxpress.com reminded that people should never rush to the emergency room if the only worries are the rashes that can be seen on the toes. However, Freeman pointed out that never to ignore the symptom and should contact their doctors or dermatologists.
