The Barilla Pasta Championship Asia 2025 was won by Filipino chef Aaron Joseph Gulinao, who defeated regional finalists in the competition’s grand finals in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Gulinao impressed the judges with his technique, originality, and mastery of Italian flavors infused with subtle Filipino influences. His winning dish showcased balanced textures, refined plating, and a deep understanding of modern pasta cuisine.
Using Barilla’s distinctive pasta, which is prepared from a premium semolina blend established during the brand’s 145-year history, the event, organized by Barilla for Professionals, brings together up-and-coming chefs from Asia to refine their skills, share ideas, and showcase their creativity.
According to organizers, the event aims to hone culinary skills, promote cross-cultural food creativity, and build a community where emerging chefs can exchange techniques and ideas.
“The championship is not just a competition—it’s a platform where Asian chefs can express their artistry through pasta,” Barilla Asia’s regional representative said.
Judges noted Gulinao’s exceptional balance of innovation and respect for classic Italian techniques. His dish highlighted high-quality ingredients and a clear culinary narrative, which set him apart from the competition.
“I wanted to present something bold yet familiar,” Gulinao said after the win. “Barilla pasta has always been a staple for me, and I wanted to honor its heritage while adding a touch of Filipino soul.”
His victory drew praise from culinary experts in the Philippines and abroad, with several chefs calling it a “historic win” for the country’s growing presence on the global gastronomic stage.
Gulinao’s achievement adds to the rising visibility of Filipino cuisine and culinary talent in international competitions. The Philippine culinary community celebrated his win, noting that it inspires more young Filipino chefs to pursue excellence and participate in global culinary events.
The Barilla Pasta Championship Asia is expected to return next year with an even larger pool of participants, solidifying its reputation as one of the region’s top platforms for showcasing pasta innovation and modern gastronomy.
